The
farm, which dates back to the 14th century, is in the small
village of Pogni, between Florence and Siena, a short distance
from Marcialla and divided between the municipal areas of
Certaldo and Barberino Val d’Elsa.
The land in this hills is mainly of the types known as galestro (rich in splintered stones) and alberese (light grey shaly limestone formed in the Eocene period) which combine with the particular local microclimate to make Pogni and Marcialla a niche area highly suited to winegrowing, especially for Sangiovese (used to make Chianti) and Cabernet (for ageing in barriques).
Fattoria Pogni, at 400m above sea level, covers 28 hectares in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone cultivated with vineyards (10 hectares) and olive groves (2000 trees). As well as Sangiovese and Cabernet, we grow native grape varieties like Canaiolo, Colorino, Trebbiano and Malvasia del Chianti. The types of olive grown here are Frantoiano, Correggiolo, Moraiolo, Leccino and Pendolino.
- The new vinification cellar
has stainless steel vats with systems for temperature control,
pumping over and refuse pressing. The wines are aged in French
oak barriques and tonneaux, while bottle ageing takes place
in the old cellars carved into the rocks and decorated with
ancient farming implements. In this charming, timeless atmosphere
our wines can be tasted today just like centuries ago.
